Megan, 15 years old, confides to you that she and her boyfriend have had sex a few times. Megan is concerned about getting pregnant but does not know much about contraception. She says that talking to her parents about sex and contraception is out of the question. 1. How can you help Mega make responsible decisions concerning her sexuality? 2. What problems have you seen in adolescents who become parents? 3. As a community nurse, what are your concerns about this teenager and what would be your priorities to address with this pregnant teenager?
Answer: It is important to provide counselling and advocacy to the client. The client need to make understand about the protective intimacy and physical relationship. The use of the contraception prevents unwanted pregnancies, prevent from sexually transmitted diseases or the infections. There are several methods such as using precautions physical barriers, the use of the condoms etc. This could prevent pregnancy.
Adolescent doesn't know much about the protective sex and when they tend to become parents, they have very less knowledge about carings. Along with the parenting problem, they would face several other issues as the child may not be healthy, adolescent pregnancy shows various risk.
It is important to provide information to the pregnant teenager about the specific consideration for the nutrients. The client need to take healthy foods and supplements. There could be chances of improper growth of the fetus, hence proper diet and medicine should be taken. It is important that the nurse should educate, provide advocacy to the client. The nurse need to make the client understand about the importance of the supplements that should be taken.
