in the documentary Trapped, what are the restrictions placed on the right to abortion? (including the TRAP laws). Why might those restrictions exist?
The documentary Trapped is directed by a lawyer turned film-makers Dawn Porter. The documentary focus on the body of a woman as a site of constant ownserhip and privatization by the religious conservative forces. It shows the on going constant struggle of abortion clinic staff(Texas) and doctors fighting against the conservative TRAP laws, to continue providing health safety to women who seek abortion. Since the year 2010, many such laws have been suggested by the conservatives state legislatures in the south.
There are many restriction placued on the rights to abortion. Few of them , as seen in the documentary are as follows. TRAP (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers) enforces restrictions and requirements on doctors who carry our abortion in clinics. For example, one of the TRAP law requires the abortion to be specifically performed in an expensive facility with advance surgical technology, for a safe abortion process. Another law requires that physician who carry put the abortion procedures have admitting privilege in the local hospital. Now, both of these restriction on abortion not only reduces women's access to abortion but also make the process of abortion extreamly expensive and hard to meet at financial terms. Last but not the least, anti-abortion laws in south of America where conservatives rule the geography, has its roots in religious ideologies. According to Christianity, abortion is a sin as it involves killing another being. This ideology is heavily practiced by the conservatives and passing of the anti-abortion laws and protest is influenced by a religious notion, as well. These restrictions exist on the grounds of providing safe abortion to women and to practice the anti-abortion teachings of Christainity. Although, the TRAP law neither provides safe abortion practices, nor give women the right to her an body. These restrictions only jeopardizes women's rights to healthcare, safe and legal process of choosing what needs to be done to her body and with her consent.
