Exam question 9: Noise
You are responsible for running an experimental project in the hospital, which is about studying the nurse's motor function while doing some typical work. You have therefore built a wireless system for measuring EMG signals. The laboratory is located next to the hospital laundry room
9.a): Which external sources of noise might be in this place? (mention at least 5)
9.b): How do these noise sources connect to your system?
9.c): Explain your strategy to reduce the noise described in (9a).
A)The external sources of noise can be
1)Any local electric outlet connecting to study equipment
2)Any mobile phone
3)Any computer or other Such device
4)Any power line near the hospital premises
5)Ground loops caused by connecting any device from two different power outlets
B)These noise generating sources cause the signal being studied for our experiment to get corrupted due to interference from the noise signals . Actual data which we need here for our study will be with errors and so our experiment accuracy is affected !!
C) There can be few things which must be taken as precaution :
A)Ensure each equipment is provided power from one outlet dedicated only , so that ground loops can be avoided !!
B)Ensure shielding of equipment to prevent interference with any electromagnetic radiation
C)Ensure power lines are built from fixed distance from hospital as per local electric codes , to avoid interference!!
