Expert Solution

Highly engaged employees are self-motivated and keep themselves aligned to the organisational goals, on their own, without any corercion from superiors.
They are always on the learning-mode to constantly improve upon their performance , both quantitatively & qualitatively , without being asker for.
They are responsible, stay connected to the job at hand and know very well when to stretch themselves or go that extra mile, when the work demands-- not just working for the sake of answerability , but put genuine efforts for the sake of the work at hand.
They actually know how to shape the work & contribute positively to the organisation, connecting with customers & vendors , from the point of view of an employer--not just interacting on behalf of the employer.
That said,
there is nothing wrong in letting him choose some non-standard work arrangement, which he feels fit to discharge his duty.
Wherever , he is , he does not need any supervision nor mentoring. He is a self-starter, planner, executor of the job.
Non-standard work arrangements include anything other than the regular 9 am to 5 pm office work----ie. Part-time ,contractual, working-from home, or come-on-call, etc.
As long as he can deliver results , on time, that too ,being self-motivated , should be fine with an employer.
But the employer should also be aware of the nature of the job , its intricacies involved like the maximum time ,it can take, etc.--so as to be cautious as not to over-expect from the employee. Else, he may fall out of favor with a geniune employee.
