Why does it appear that most of society would believe that crime rates are increasing?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • In many countries crime is increasing. The main reason behind this is growth of unemployment. The cost of living is rising and some people commit crimes to fulfill their desires. But, this is not a good reason to commit a crime and this is not the only reason. Some people don't work because they don't want to work.
  • And yes, society is believing in this, since the media is only highlighting this.People commiting crime on a daily basis,is something which is becoming a headline for news channels and newspapers everyday, which is making the society believe that crime is increasing.
  • Nowdays media is most likely to report crime rather than positive things. Negative reporting leads to viewership. So as media has grown, so is crime reporting.
  • Also, availability of information to do crime. Movies, TV shows and Internet gives people new ideas, new way to commit crime. Before internet, no one would have done hacking but as internet is growing so is the crime of hacking.
  • Rise of political rivalary. In India as well as USA, you can see, rise of hate politics. Political parties often resort to violence around the world and media keeps highlighting that.Movies and television shows also mostly highlight the negative side which is leading to affirmation of the belief in rising crime rates in our societies.
