The North American Island Nations are commonly referred to as the Caribbean Nations or the Caribbean Island Nation. These countries or Nations have long been reeling with economic disadvantages and under long rate of development for many years now. The Caribbean nations have been long facing the issue of Poverty and the lack of Social welfare schemes. There are many other issues too, however, poverty and lack of social welfare can be considered the two main economic obstacles in these countries.
The primary reason behind the economic backwardness of the Caribbean Island countries is the unresponsiveness of the various factors of economy. The agricultural sector has not been modernized with the global changes which has resulted in the outdated systems still in practice , which has resulted in the agricultural sector being totally dormant. These Nations are not able to produce the enough agricultural needs in their won countries and are majorly dependent on imports. The other factors of economy such as labor and finance etc are not available due to lack on economic activity in these countries and they usually go out of their countries for wage. Another critical factor pertaining to their backwardness is the still prevalent Class and Race hierarchy in these countries. Since the colonial rule , these divisions of the society are still present and thus bring about a huge division in the society. These factors further push back the economic pace of any development. Poverty, is perhaps the greatest factor among them, however, it is the effect of the above factors. The rate of poor people in these nations are alarmingly high, which has led to an unstable economic development.
Another critical economic legacy among the Caribbean nations is the lack or total absence of any social benefit programs or schemes from the Government side. It has been a feature of the Caribbean Nations where, the Government’s in these countries have seldom taken up any proper initiative for the upliftment of the poor in their countries. There have been very less initiative to infuse any food program for the starving poor people. Housing schemes have been very rare. Other social security programs such as health schemes and other development schemes have been rare too. These have led to the people of these countries reeling under poor conditions and not able to come out of the cycle of poverty. The economic backwardness in these countries have forced these countries to depend majorly on imports. The Balance of trade is totally imbalanced. Thus these nations are not able to develop at the same pace as the Global community.
