If you read this paragraph would you say it is true or false? IF you think it is false, explain why?
I believe that stigma of mental illness is wide spread across our nation. I don’t understand why it is a stigma in the first place. As, a society, there is a lack of knowledge and understanding with mental illness. Social media posting depicts bullying and shaming of individuals who may suffer from mental health diagnosis. Many of those who are diagnosis hide their disease to avoid judgement. However, mental health illness is not much different from metabolic illness. For example, diabetes maybe caused by the body’s inability to produce adequate amounts of insulin and depression maybe caused by the body’s inability to produce adequate amount of serotonin. Therefore, our society has to educate themselves on mental illness to decrease the stigma.
The paragraph is true because the stigma about mental illness has been there in the society for long time. Early days it was linked to evil spirits and that’s why it was called possessed. These people were tortured and made to suffer severely. Later in the medieval period, they were kept separately and few medicines were tried. With the growth in the field of psychology, mental illness was recognized as a normal problem which could be cured with love, care and some medicine. The society hasn’t changed much because they look down on people with mental illness and treat them like second class citizens. People with mental illness do not want to show get treatment because they fear the society will avoid them and criticize them for their mental illness. Enough awareness should be given to people regarding treating people with mental illness with kindness and children should be taught in the school itself thus we can bring in more support to the mentally ill people.
