An intern should try is level best to balance between the two. What I mean by saying this is that he should try his level best to fulfill the legal requirement for his position, but he should also try to fulfill his legal application for the elderly client. That means, he should personally try to help that client in order to meet his legal requirements.
According to me, he is a great dilemma about what to choose between his ethical obligations and his legal requirement for his position.
An intern should try his level best to balance between the two. What I mean by saying this is that he should try his level best to fulfill the legal requirement for his position, but he should also try to fulfill his legal application for the elderly client. That means, he should personally try to help that client in order to meet his legal requirements. He can also discuss this with his supervisor, which in turn, would help him regarding the same. He should tell the supervisor about his dilemma of choosing one between is legal requirements and his ethical obligations.
But if in any manner it is not possible to balance the two then he should go for his legal requirements because it's not the duty of him to educate the elderly client regarding all the matters, rather he should go for his legal requirements and should focus on his own job instead of doing social work with the risk of losing his job.
It is the responsibility of his elderly client to be aware before making any contract with the intern, so elderly clients need to be more responsible and the intern should fulfill his legal requirements and should focus on his work, thus, choosing legal requirements over ethical obligations.
