The ventral posterolateral nucleus (VPL) is a nucleus of the thalamus. Together with the ventral posteromedial nucleus (VPM), ventral posterior inferior nucleus (VPI) and ventromedial posterior nucleus (VMpo), it constitutes the ventral posterior nucleus.
The VPL receives information from the neospinothalamic tract and the medial lemniscus of the posterior column-medial lemniscus pathway.
It then projects this sensory information to Brodmann's Areas 3, 1 and 2 in the postcentral gyrus. Collectively, Brodmann areas 3, 1 and 2 make up the primary somatosensory cortex of the brain.
The ventral posterior nucleus also receives somatosensory information from the contralateral (opposite) side of the face and head via three branches of the trigeminal nerve (CN V).
The ventral posterior nucleus (VPN) is divided into subregions, each receiving a unique projection.
For example, one region receives information from only Pacinian corpuscles, with different areas of the body represented by different groups of neurons within this region.
At least three additional subregions of the VPN have been identified based on responsiveness to selective somatosensory receptors or combinations of receptors. These subregions of the VPN project to specific regions of the somatosensory cortex.
