Robert David Putnam (1941) was from America and a Political Scientist.
He was very famous for his publication Bowling Alone,(1995)which was a controversial publication.In his publication he made the argument that social capital is essentially the amount of "trust" available.In the view of Putnam & his followers social capital is a key component to buliding & maintianing democracy.

Putnam identifies a negative trend in recent years because of decline in group memberships and activites.He specifies there are mainly four reason behind decline in social capital in united state:

-pressure of time & money.

-increasing distance and lack of connectivity between living spaces.

-overexposure to television.

-generational differences.
