Helmholtz free energy F, is a measure of the useful work that can be obtained in an isochoric and isothermal process. It is a Legendre transformation of the function of internal energy,U.
The most definitive reason is that the term TS (product of temperature and entropy) is the thermal energy which is needed to create our thermodynamic system. Now, if we were to subtract this thermal energy from the internal energy U, we would have all sorts of energy which could be extracted to do work. And specifically for a reversible process, it is the negative change of free energy that can be used to obtain work.
Practical systems are not usually isolated. If a thermodynamic model is at a constant temperature and goes through a process having constant volume, the system will reach towards a state such that it minimizes F = U -TS . Hence, the word "free" states that energy is available for practical applications.
