What type(s) of carnivore animals are found in the Seattle/ King
County area and how are organizations (like the zoo) studying and
trying to help them?
Urban spaces and the suburbs that sprawel around them are growing worldwide, pusting some carnivore species into more remote regions ,while forcing others to adapt to higher human densities .Increasing contact between human and carnivores potentially leads to more human -carnivore intrections and incresed concerns about risks to humans whether real or perceived continued survival of urban carnivores popluation as well as sense of security for the public required incresed understanding of and coexistance with the species.
Woodland park zoo and seattle university have launched a new project to explore how mammalian carnivores such as coyotes, foxes raccons, bobcats, and even cougars and beans live and intrect with people across urban and suburban areas in the seattle region .
These are terrestrial (non marrine) mammales in the taxonomic order carnivora (expect for opossums) .some of them have carnivorus diet (eating other animals ) .many of them however have an omnivorous diet ,eating plants as well as animals .we are focusing on species that tend to occur withing or adjacent to developed regions and are generally easy for the public to identify.
Carnivores Animals such as birds of prey the primary focus of this project is to further understand and support coexistance with the eight focal species.
