Can you light diamond on fire?

Specify the reasons if your answer is YES. Make it in a paragraph form and elaborate it.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The net extra energy released in this reaction can then go on to rip more carbon atoms free of their non-oxygen neighbors, that's why, continuing the reaction, or the energy can release as heat and light. Carbon bonded with oxygen makes carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, that are the waste products of combustion. They drift away from the fire as gases. Since biological organisms, and the fuels derived from biological organisms, contain a lot of carbon, much of the burning that goes on around us is carbon combustion such as camp fires, candles, car engines, and gas stoves.

Yes, diamond can be burned. The most usual form of burning is the  carbon combustion. In carbon combustion, carbon atoms break their bonds with each other and with other atoms (that needs energy) to developed bonds with oxygen atoms.

A beam of white light is incident on the surface of a diamond at an angle ?a.(Figure 1) Since the index of refraction depends on the light's wavelength, the different colors that comprise white light will spread out as they pass through the diamond. The indices of refraction in diamond are nred=2.410 for red light and nblue=2.450 for blue light. The surrounding air has nair=1.000. Note that the angles in the figure are not to scale. What is light? You can start by describing the different historic models for light and explain their individual strength and shortcomings in explaining observable phenomena. Then, try to summarize our current quantum mechanic understanding and highlight its implications for all matter and energy. Finally, consider identifying visible light within the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum and discuss applications that may depend on different light effects such as photoelectric or electro-luminescent effect.

(Q2) As a fire engineer, assume that you are assigned to a fire engineering design of the retail building with extraordinary atrium that connected six floors. You have to adopt fire engineering approach on this project and conduct a theoretical analysis of full evacuation in this commercial building. Please brief your design procedures. (Hint: Relationship between occupant density, travel speed and flow is recommended to consider.)
