Why is it that people in the United States (including the authors of this text) tend to be uncomfortable discussing the topic of social class? Do you think social-class mobility is increasing or decreasing in the United States? What are primary means of upward mobility today?

The majority in the United States doesn't like to discuss the upper, middle or working-class system or its comparison. There are three main reasons behind it.

  • Most of the people in the country are not sure about they belong to which social class and somehow feels like they are in the middle, which is also true in a sense.
  • There was always a lack of clarity in their socioeconomic and political stances.
  • They believe that their ancestors were working hard to take care of the family, hence doesn't want to forget about those roots.

Social mobility is a term used to refer to the changes in the socioeconomic status of an individual or a family. A shift towards one social stratum to another. Recent studies show that there was not much change in the social mobility of the country for decades and one among the lowest within the major industrialist economies.

Upward mobility refers to a shift towards a higher socioeconomic position. Several important factors that support upward mobility today include Education, Motivation, Marriage, Luck and Urbanization, etc. General health condition can be considered as one of the basic factor that is applicable in all other scenarios.
