1. Select a specific example of how a plant responds to stimuli and describe the mechanism by which this occurs including a description of the specialized cells involved.
2. How is this response an adaptation for the plant?
1.The plants can respond to the stimulus of touch and is known as thigmoplasty.Mimosa pudica or touch me not plant is a classic example. When the leaflets of the plants are touched this triggers an action potential which takes place in a specialized pulvinus in which the lower half cells expels pottasium and chlorine ions , also calcium ions enters. This results in the water movement out of cells due to osmosis. This result in shrinkage of cells in temprorary manner. They leaflets gets dropped downward like a folding fan.
This response over time has become an adaption to plants the main reason is that it helps the plant when they are attacked by intruders like herbivores or insects which can cause great damage to leaflet. As they will touch the plant and the leaflets will get dropped so they will not be able to accesss the plant.Hence saving the plant so this thigmoplastic mechanism is an adaptation.
