1) The Situation & Information
(a) You have been doing a job that is well paid.
(b) But you do not like the work you do.
(c) Now it's only a walkable distance between your home and workplace.
(d) You have sufficient time to spend with your wife and can have lunch together every day.
(e) Received an interesting job offer as per your taste but it offers slightly less payment than the current job.
(f) A newly offered job requires 40 km of travel, up and down.
(g) You are living with your wife and wanted to have kids soon.
2) Barriers
(a) Less payment is not a good thing especially because you are planning to become a father shortly.
(b) Need of travelling around 40 km a day that will cost you time, money and physical involvement.
(c) Probably you will not get enough lunch break time to come to your home during work because of long-distance.
3) Alternatives
(a) Accept the new job offer.
(b) Continue with the current job and reject the new offer.
(c) Try to find a new job that is personally interesting to you, near to your home.
(d) If possible request your current boss to reassign your work responsibilities as per your liking.
(e) Enquire about the availability of the same job near to your place, with the concerned person who offered you the new job, just in case if they are having multiple divisions.
4) Values
(a) Family values.
(b) Values financial status.
(c) Career ambition.
(d) Planning for the future.
5) Decision
If the above mentioned 'Alternatives', such as (c), (d) or (e) is possible then you can plan according to that. If not, the only benefit of accepting the new job offer in this situation is, you will get a ‘fun to do job’ as per your liking. You will lose so many things that are crucial at this point in life which includes money, the happiness of being together with your wife, time, etc.
You should not speak to your boss or talk to the person who offered you the new job about your needs, unless you are very sure that you could manage it. Preferably only after a character analysis of your superiors.
6) Communication
(a) To the current boss: Explain him your plan about having a child and in a polite way you can let him know that you are tired of doing these current job responsibilities and you would like a change in it, if possible. So you could have comfortably concentrated on your family responsibilities.
(b) To the concerned person who offered you the job: Let him know your plans and try to convince him of your needs of being near to your home. So they can provide you a job offer near to your home.
(c) To your wife: Unless you get a ‘green signal’ for any of the above two things You do not have to discuss anything with her since it might create unwanted emotional stress. If any of the two proposals mentioned above works for you then you can casually inform about your new decision to your wife.
(7) Risks & Consequences
(a) If you continue with your uninteresting job eventually you become bored and chances are there that you will get fired for not doing the duty properly.
(b) If you take up the new job you could have ended up with an unsettled family life due to the stress in traveling and time management
(c) You will lose the current job and the new job offer if you are not well-prepared in presenting your current situation to your superiors.
