Holistic healthcare relies on the placebo effect. However,
traditional therapy discourages the use of placebos for pain
control. (Ethicists hold that placebos are deceptive and do not
respect patient autonomy.) Traditional researchers attempt to
factor out the placebo effect when conducting clinical research
trials. React to these two belief systems.

Which belief is most congruent with your view
of healthcare?

How do you think these divergent views might affect
research on CAM?

Placebo is a part of healing that promotes positive thinking. Sometimes the patient may develop Negative thinking or develops side effects of nausea, vomiting, and constipation. These responses are called as 'Placebo Effect'. Researchers believe that the placebo effect mainly focuses on the body and the mind. It will fulfill the patient's expectations and the stimulants increase the reaction which improves the physical condition. Stronger feelings will increase the more positive effect. Studies also found that the placebo has actually shown physical changes.

When the traditional point of view, many CAM medicines may produce better results than placebo. Many traditional medicines such as homeopathy, acupuncture, Chinese medicine has been effective compared to placebo. It is against the rituals. Ethically, It is not acceptable. AMA prohibits the placebo. In my viewpoint, it is better to decide based on the condition and the need of the patient and try to be truthful. It can be used only to support the patient emotionally.

The divergent views and debates on placebo continue in the recent times. One group is arguing that it is unethical in practice whereas some of them consider it is essential to protect the society from harm. Researchers found confusion in observing of the placebo effect due to variation in response as it focused on the Psychosocial reaction. Further, It is questionable that the use of placebo on the vulnerable groups. Thus the research findings should not be useful in the clinical practice. CAM Practitioners have a different approach. CAM is a type of holistic approach considering the individual health. So the Researchers should consider of alternative designs in conducting of research and to protect the people from the fake treatment.
