Gout is the result of a metabolic disorder caused by a specific
genetic mutation. Describe the causes of gout, list three drugs
used to treat it and a thorough description of their mechanism of
action.
1.CAUSES OF GOUT
Hpyeruricemia
Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood, which condition known as Hpyeruricemia. Mainly occurs too much uric acid produced, or not enough is excreted from the body by urine.
Urate crystals can form when uric acid amount is more in the blood. Urine crystals are sharp needle like structure which can cause pain and inflammation in gout attack.
Purines which found in certain found such as organ meats, seafood break down into uric acid. Alcoholic beverages are the other source of uric acid in the body.
THREE DRUGS USED FOR GOUT TREATMENT
1.Allopurinol
2.Colchicine
3.Febuxostat
ACTION OF MECHANISM
ALLOPURINOL
Allopurinol is a medication used to decrease high blood uric acid levels. It is classified as Xanthine oxidase inhibitor, which stops the enzyme Xanthine oxidase from proper functioning. Xanthine oxidase coverts oxypurines to uric acid. Thus uric acid production will reduce.
COLCHICINE
Colchicine is an alternative treatment for gout patient who cannot take anti-inflammatory pain killers. It prevents the number of white blood cells into the inflamated areas in gout. This breaks the inflammatory cycle and thus reduces the inflammation and pain of the gout attack.
FEBUXOSTAT
Febuxostat is an non_purine selective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase. It works by non competitively blocking the active site of xanthine oxidase. It inhibits xanthine oxidase and thus reduce the uric acid production in the body. It is generally prescribed for patient who cannot take allopurinol.
