Kirby- Bauer Antimicrobic sensitivity
Please give a brief answer
Why is it necessary to consult the Kirby-Bauer Evaluation Table before reporting the sensitivity of a bacterium to a given antimicrobic?
Answer 1. The other name of this test is disc diffusion test which first used in 1950. To treat any bacterial disease it is mandatory to check whether bacteria are susceptible to antibiotic or resistant before giving a set of drug. To know the response of the bacteria against various antibiotics this test named Kirby bauer antimircoorganism is performed. It is also known as disc diffusion method because a disc of specific concentration of antibiotic is placed over the medium of agar which contains the microorganism (bacteria). In this method Mueller Hilton agar medium (High protein content) inoculated containing test bacteria and then filter paper disc with specific antibiotic is placed over it. If bacteria are resistant to the antibiotic we would not be able to see the growth around the disc or if it is susceptible to antibiotic we can see growth around the disc and a zone of inhibition occur.
Use Of chart – In chart measurement of the growth of bacteria is mentioned in which millimeter measurement is used. The result in chart reports about the sensitivity of bacteria for particular antibiotic. The table records help in evaluating the sensitivity difference of various species of bacteria and help in determining that out of them which is more susceptible to particular antibiotic.
