THIS IS FOR THE MOVIE XALA
ANSWER= XALA, means sexual impotence, and the film, culled from his own novel, is a brilliantly funny, ironic
satire about post-colonial senegal. IT upset the goverment considerably- 11 cuts were made before it was released
in Dakar. the thrust of the plot is that a new black elite has taken power.
Men are generally expected to be strong, aggresive, and bold. Every society, ethnic group, and culture has gender role expectations, but they can be very different from group to group. they can also change in the same society over time.
The film was directed by Qusmane sembane and cenematography by Geores caristan orlando l. lopez seydina d. saye farba seck and edited by Florence Eymon. the language of the film was French wolf. i think in the film all elements are very important like camera angles, sound, costumes, lighting, language choice, locations etc.
Relations between France and senegal stretch back as early as the 1300s when French merchants travelled to and traded among the present day senegalese coast. France exported cloth, iron, and muskets to senegal and imported textiles, ivory, spices and slaves.
Yet a more in-depth analysis of this film reveals that the women characters in xala are more than appendices to EI Hadji. in fact the female characters in xala, most notable EL Hadji's wives and the domineering ....the extent to which his economic support provides the only link between EI Hadji and his wives. exhibit the power that many women in fact yield over their male counterparts.
The senegalese economy has traditionally revolved around a single cash crop, the peanut. the goverment, however, has worked to diversify both cash crops and subsistence agriculture by expanding into commodities such as cotton, garden produce, and sugarcane as well as by promoting nonagricultural sectors. the goverment was successful in making fishing, phosphates, and tourism major sources of foreign exchange at the begining of the 21st century, although the condition of the transportation and power infrastructure placed limits on the amount of expansion posssible. exploitation of minieral resources such as gold, petroleum, and natural gas also diversified the economy.
After the credits the film proper opens with EI Hadji collecting his two other... the elder, adja awa astou, is traditional and religious. yes EL hajj is masculine because his social and insitutional structures help to sustain and reproduce men's health risk and the social construction of men as the strongers sex.
The male sex role in this film: the usual conception of " sex role " is that a man or a women enacts a general set of expectations attached to their sex. there are always two sex roles in any cultural context, one male and the other female. the idea that masculanity is the internalized male sex role allows for social change.
The movie faat kine is a rearrangement of the literary writing xala. both are the works of qusmane sembene's. qusmane has employed the use of magical realism in both his work. the intention is to reach a wider audience that is compounded with literacy. therefore, the approach of the two stories is within the african context. in the two stories, what stands out is the author's intention of challenging africans to embrace their culture. hence, there are many thematic similarities between the novel xala and the film faat kine. Faat kine is like a companion film in the gist of very many thinghs thus making the concept quite different from the novel xala entirely different. there are dissimilarity in the plot. however, the context of both works is postcolonial senegal. hence, the comman themes in these works are social change, patriarchal, religion, cutural, feminism and conflict.
