Which population shows genetic drift?

A. A population of harvest mice disappears from an area after a devastating flood.
B. Wolves in an island population have redder fur than mainland wolves due to the genetic makeup of the first wolf colonizers.
C. A chickadee population moves to an area that has more seed-bearing plants.
D. A population of tansy begins to bloom later in fall as the climate changes.

Expert Solution

Option B:  Wolves in an island population have redder fur than mainland wolves due to the genetic makeup of the first wolf colonizers.

Genetic Drift means variations or change in the frequency of genotypes in a population that is their is chance of particular genes that might reduce in frequence of completely disappear after random/chance sampling.

It is of two types Bottle neck effect and Founder Effect

In bottle neck effect the frequency of certain alleles drastically decrease or completely eliminated because the organisms that carry these alleles are decreased or eliminated and the other alleles frequency increases in number because they are only ones left in the population or they are the most present. The population of certain alleles drastically decrease because of predators, diseases or competition.

In founder effect a new population is founded in a new location because of various barriers where the migrates species do not mate or interact with the original population.

The interactions between the organisms of the same species and the mutations occurred between them will lead to the development of new species.

So, in these options Wolves in an island population have redder fur than mainland wolves due to the genetic makeup of the first wolf colonizers.

So in this population redder fur wolves follow Bottle neck effect, organisms which carry specific alleles for redder fur wolves are more prominent than the organisms that carry alleles of mainland wolves probablt because the organisms that carry mainland wolf alleles are eliminated or less prominent and there are more colonizers of the alleles of redder fur wolves who has established there alleles genotype in the population.

Colonization: Establishment of the alleles in a population in a new location.
