dogs can contract coronavirus how can we know if the virus has already been present in dog populations versus the situation of a novel infection in dogs. imagine two evolutionary scenarios for the evolution of coronavirus: one were coronavirus originated in dogs and jump to humans and one where the coronavirus originated in humans and jumped to dogs. draw two simplified phylogeny's that reflect these two scenarios. which of these two phylogeny's do current COVID-19 data sets support?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Dogs can contract certain types of coronaviruses, but this novel coronavirus COVID-19, is believed to not be a health threat to the dogs.
  • Canine coronavirus disese known as CCoV, it is highly infectious intestinal infection i dogs. CCov is not the same virus as SARS-CoV-2 that cause the novel coronavirus(COVID-19). CCov does not affect people, it causes gastrointestinal problems in dogs. Crowding and unsanitary conditions leads to CCoV transmission in dogs.
  • The World Health Organisation has stated that ther is no evidence that a dog or any other pet can transmit COVID-19.
  • COVID-19 mainly spreading througth droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or while speaking.
  • Local government health officials tells that there is currently no evidence that pet animals can be a source of infection of COVID-19 or that they become sick. It tells that till today no dogs or any other pets are affected by COVID-19.
  • The virus survives best on smooth surface such as countertops, porous materials such as pet fur, it can absorb and trap pathogens. So the general practice of washing our hands after touching a puppy or a dog help us to protect our self from causing the disease.
  • If a person test positive for COVID-19 or have been exposed to the novel coronavirus, he must avoid exposing the pets and prevent getting the virus on their skin or fur, because which might be passed on to another person who touches the animal.
  • There is no proof that dogs are affected by COVID-19, but any infected person touches the dog or sneezing near by it will cause virus getting into their fur, from there if any one touching the dog can be affected by COVID-19.
  • The current COVID-19 data set supports second type of phylogeny, disease can spread from human to dogs fur(while sneezing etc), from there, if any person touches the dog can be affected by COVID-19(through dogs fur there is chance of transmitting disease to humans).

In a recent article from Travel Weekly on the Department of Transportation’s on-time stats for airline arrivals, the argument is made that the airline industry pads its own statistics in order reap cost benefits, which may or may not be passed on to consumers. Is the reporting difference an ethical breach of confidence between the consumer and the industry?”

You are a researcher studying the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). You want to know whether the virus frequently jumps from one mammal species to another or whether different strains remain specific to certain hosts over evolutionary time. How could you use phylogenetic methods to test this? Why does this matter for medical doctors and the world to know ?
