The speed of sound is finite. This means that it has a specific, distinct speed, that we can calculate. Explain an every day example of how we know that the speed of light is finite.

Solutions

Expert Solution

In everyday life we see the objects which are visible to us because of the sunlight present , whose reflection onto our eyes makes us visible.

Now, If we consider that light has no speed limit and is infinite in magnitude, and moreover may it be light or sound they both propagate in air as waves as light and sound waves respectively.

now further if the light propagate in air as light waves then it must have some wavelength and speed and when these waves propagate and oscillate with fixed time and wavelength then only we are able to differentiate the colors of light ( red, green , yellow ,blue etc) such as during the occurrence of rainbow , when we see seven different colors of light.

so, with different colors of light having different wavelength and if the speed of light is infinite then the wave of light will have no time to oscillate and if it does not oscillate., waves would not be produced and thus no color of light will be visible to us, which does not happens in reality in daily life.

so .it is evident that speed of light must have some finite speed.

Would the speed of sound in a monatomic gas like helium be the same as it would be in air (primarily a diatomic gas)? Why? Assume that both gases have the same density and exist at the same pressure. Yes. If the pressure and density of both gases are the same, then the speed of sound must be the same. No. The energy that goes into molecular bonds in the diatomic gas makes the effective spring constant of the gas...
