If I want to make 12 g of XeO2 from the elements, how much Xe do I need, in grams
The balanced reaction is Xe + O2 XeO2
Molar mass of Xe = 131.3 g/mol
Molar mass of XeO2 = ( At.mass of Xe) + (2xAt.mass of O)
= ( 131.3) + ( 2x16)
= 163.3 g/mol
According to the balanced equation,
1 mole of XeO2 is formed from 1 mole of Xe
OR
163.3 g of XeO2 is formed from 131.3 g of Xe
12 g of XeO2 is formed from M g of Xe
M = ( 12x131.3) / 163.3
= 9.65 g
Therefore the mass of Xe required is 9.65 g
