So this week we learned about the four V's of Big data - Velocity, Volume, Veracity and Variety. As we know the velocity of data can vary so does it affect the other three V's? How are they affected? Also same if there are changes in other or one of the V then how are the rest affected?
We know that the 4 Vs are
Volume
Velocity
Variety
Veracity
Each of these Vs are interconnected and impact each other.
Volume is simply the amount of data. With increase the volume in the data, this data has to come in fast(Velocity) so that processing is possible. At the same time, this data comes from different sources and hence it is in different datatypes, like pictures, text, audio etc. Since the data is huge and comes in different formats at a very high speed the accuracy of the data is very important(veracity). Large amount of data, coming at high speed in a different format is useless if it is not accurate since we will not be able to carry out meaningful data processing and extract insights from the data.
Hence each of the four Vs are important, if for example if data cannot be stored and transmitted that then the whole premise of Big data fall flat. On the other hand, if a large amount of data cannot come in at a high velocity but takes a lot of time, then it is useless.
For example, Tsunami monitors all over the globe keep streaming data to the hub centre. If this data collected by the sensory from a different location cannot be transmitted fast then predicting and give early warning signals of upcoming disasters will not be possible.
In today modern age, we get data from different devices, such as IoT or even our mobile phones, our Facebook post, our Instagram pictures. All these come in different format due to which the richness in the insights is generated. For example companies like facebook combined and process this data to derive insights that help them to sell or provide additional services to users.
Hence the 4Vs of Big Data are interconnected and any change impacts the other.
