Take a position... TV advertising has largely become unimportant versus TV advertising is sill the most powerful advertising medium.
To understand the effectiveness of TV advertising, we need to understand the popularity of TV amongst viewers as opposed to any other platform where advertising can be done. And what are these alternate mediums. One of the biggest one of course are streaming services. Then we have ad placements on the internet, be it YouTube Ads or something like Ads in Spotify.
TV Viewership
According to a report by eMarketer, TV viewing time in 2019 was 4 hours 10 minutes which will lower down to 3hours 37 minutes in 2021. So if not TV, what are people watching for their entertainment needs. A large chunk is going to streaming services. Furthermore, these trends also depend on what kind of content is being watched. For example, when it comes to news, majority of millenials watch it from both digital sources as well as TV. However a whopping 36% consume news only from digital sources, while only 8% consume news from only TV.
There are certain technological shifts that are happening which will also determine the effectiveness of TV advertising. OTT (Over the Top) Content Delivery Systems such as Apple TV will also determine which way the focus shifts.
Having taken into consideration the above, TV advertising, for the time being remains as an effective mode for advertising. However, with evolution in technology and people's changing habits, TV advertising might not remain relevant after 5 years.
