If you are to conduct an experiment that will illustrate the third law of motion, how will your experiment setup be?

Expert Solution

Newton's third law of motion Experiment :

AIM : To verify Newton's third law of motion.

MATERIALS REQUIRED : Two spring balances, one of 5 N and other of 10 N and a fixed iron stand.

PROCEDURE :

(1) Take the spring balance of 5 N. Attach one end of the spring balance to the iron stand and take the other spring balance of 10 N attached it to the hook of the first spring balance hold it exactly horizontal to the table for viewing the reading of both the balances.

(2) Apply a force of the second spring balance, note the reading of both the spring balances. Force exerted by second spring balance on the first that is F21 is action force. At the same time the force exerted by the first spring balance on the second that is -F12 is the reaction force.

(3) Tabulate the observations. Gently increase the force and and note down and your observation column.

(4) Repeat experiment for 4 to 5 times and tabulate the observations.

OBSERVATION : It is observed that both action force F21 and reaction force -F12 are equal and opposite. So, F21 is equal to -F12.

Hence, Newton's third law is verified.

2-1 Discussion: Two-Dimensional Motion, Forces, and Newton's Third Law Choose a real world situation, such as diving off a diving board, rocket propulsion, or birds flying, and select a motion within that situation that does not occur in a straight line, and is set in motion by the interaction of two objects. Motion that does not occur in a straight line indicates that more than one force is acting on the object and they are responsible for what you are...
