Interpret the following results:
1. Dr. Horton conducted a study and reported: p = .001, d = .40. Dr. Theimer conducted a similar study and reported: p =.04, d = .40. Who had the larger effect and what is the most likely reason they had different p-values?
2. Dr. Lane reported that following a study on the effects of a new drug on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), that the F for the drug was p = .03. Dr. Lane concluded that the new drug showed promise in reducing the symptoms of OCD. Was Dr. Lane justified in saying this, and why or why not?
In the testing of hypothesis alternative hypothesis shows the what is study interest of the researcher.
Decision Rule:
The p-value is the probability of what is the chances of null hypothesis would be true.
i.e. the higher the p-value then higher the chances of accepting the null hypothesis.
If p-value greater than the level of significance then we accept the null hypothesis.
level of significance value is on your choice how many errors in result you accept.
in most of the study 5% or 1% level of significance used.
Qus:1
Dr. Horton and Dr. Theimer conducted the similar study.
but Dr.Horton get the good results than Dr.Theimer
because the p-value is less than Theimer i.e. chances of rejecting the null hypothesis is increases in Dr.Hortan's test.
So Dr.Horton create good results.
Results are different because the doing same study but uses different samples for this and different instruments so accuracy is changed as sample changed then p-value also changed.
Qus:2
Testing of Hypothesis:
H0: The effects of a new drug on the obsessive-compulsive disorder do not effective.
against,
H1: The effects of a new drug on the obsessive-compulsive disorder is effective.
Decision Rule:
If p-value greater than the level of significance then we accept the null hypothesis.
If Dr. Lane consider the level of significance 5% then,
p-value 0.03 < 0.05 (level of significance)
i.e. we reject null hypothesis H0.
i.e. The effects of a new drug on the obsessive-compulsive disorder is effective.
So, Dr. Lane justified this new drug is useful.
