In one process there is a throttle valve through which water vapor is passed in a superheated state, the valve operates in a steady state at P = 100 kPa and T = 250 ºC. The pressure of the fluid leaving the valve is 50 kPa. An engineer suggested replacing the valve with a turbine, this in order to get a turbine job. I. Determine the physical state of the fluid leaving the valve and the temperature. II.Determine the speed at which entropy is generated in the valve per kilogram of water that enters.III.Determine the maximum work that can be produced by a turbine per kilogram of water that enters if the current that enters the turbine is identical to the current entering the valve and the outlet pressure of the turbine is P = 50 kPa.

A well-insulated expansion/throttle valve is designed to operate with refrigerant R134a. It receives a liquid-gas mixture with a quality of 0.1 and a pressure of 400 kPa. The refrigerant leaves with a pressure of 100 kPa. Find the temperature (in Celsius) and the specific volume (m3/kg) at the exit of the valve.

In an industrial cooling process, water is circulated through a system. If water is pumped with a speed of 4.00 m/s under a pressure of 6.70 × 105 Pa from the first floor through a 3.70-cm diameter pipe, what will be the pressure on the next floor 3.90 m above in a pipe with a diameter of 2.00 cm?

During the dehydration experiment, C2H4(g) and unreacted C2H5OH(g) passed through the tube into the water. The C2H4 was quantitatively collected as a gas, but the unreacted C2H5OH was not. Explain this observation in terms of the intermolecular forces between water and each of the two gases.

An engineer has designed a valve that will regulate water pressure on an automobile engine.  The valve was tested on 220 engines and the mean pressure was 5.8 lbs/square inch.  Assume the standard deviation is known to be 0.6.  If the valve was designed to produce a mean pressure of 5.7 lbs/square inch, is there sufficient evidence at the 0.02 level that the valve does not perform to the specifications?

A conduit carrying water vapor has one inlet and two exits. At the inlet, the velocity 25 m/s, the pressure is 4 bar and the temperature is 350 Celsius. The area at the inlet is 0.2 m^2 . At both the exits, the temperature and pressure are 300 Celsius and 3 bar respectively. The volumetric flow rate is identical at the two exits. Assuming steady-state conditions, calculate the volumetric flow rate at the exits.

A 2-m3 rigid insulated tank initially containing saturated water vapor at 1 MPa is connected through a valve to a supply line that carries steam at 400°C. Now the valve is opened, and steam is allowed to flow slowly into the tank until the pressure in the tank rises to 2 MPa. At this instant the tank temperature is measured to be 300°C. Determine the mass of the steam that has entered and the pressure of the steam in the...
