Characterize the residents served by each type of housing and describe the operating characteristics of the primary types of supportive housing
Supportive housing is based on the
underlying values of empowerment and community integration.
Resident/survivors are viewed
as tenants/citizens and staff are considered to be facilitators. It
is a strength-focused approach
that provides considerable choice to residents over housing, living
companions, and daily
activities. Receiving treatment is not a requirement and the role
of the landlord and the support
provider are separated or “de-linked”. However, supports and
rehabilitative services are often
accessed as desired by individuals to help them stay in their home
and participate in their
communities.
In most any community, or region of communities, there are people
with disabilities and people who are experiencing homelessness in
need of supportive housing.

Supportive housing is provided in a variety of ways: in apartment
buildings where all units
provide supportive housing; through a rent subsidy in apartments in
the private sector;
through group home settings; and through rent-geared-to-income
apartments in non-profit
and co-op housing, and in boarding homes. Different approaches
provide people with
choice and results in better outcomes for people.
Best practice housing:
• Promotes social inclusion;
• Is affordable;
• Is Safe and well-maintained;
• Suitable; and
• Tenancy rights are promoted and respected.
