Eric is currently working part-time at a game store, but like many teens he has no idea to manage his money. When dealing with teens, you have to be able to speak to then in a certain way. How would you handle giving Eric a reality check, and is that something that we should leave up to his parents? As a career counselor for Eric what techniques, or theory would you use to help him come to terms with his own career goals

Solutions

Expert Solution

As a career counsellor i will use five step by step methods in order to give eric a reality check .Let us discuss the steps one by one

  • Developing a meaningful and therapeutic relationship with the client is the first step of good career counselling , I will first understand the needs , requirements , interest areas and what goals Eric is having on his mind .It will give me a brief insight about Eric's career aspirations .
  • Then in the second step I will define the career goals mutually with Eric . It will help in removing any confusion regarding the goals and will induce some clarity in his mind . This will also involve helping Eric in understanding the financial aspects of career and importance of savings .
  • Third step will involve self container, plants and exploration . It will help Eric to vent out any conflict and provide him space to explore .
  • Fourth step is aligning the current job market with his career goals . First I will provide a brief idea about the present job market and create a link between his career and job opportunities .It will help him clarify his doubts and make him more concerned about the opportunities that are available in the market .
  • The final step would be helping him turning his potential into a career such as providing him insights about his skills and motivating him to incorporate them into his career path .

Also informing the parents is important as they are the people who are more close to him . They act as support to him during stressful situations.
