Exam practice problems- applied stats and research

Bug Thugs is a national newcomer in the pest control market. Their Two big competitors each have a well-known "signature" commercial, and Bug Thugs wants to also develop their own "signature" commercial that will cause as many customers as possible to remember and choose them first. Their creative team has come up with two possible themes "Tough-Guy-Funny" and "Straight Talk Facts". In addition, an advertising consultant has suggested that by saying "Bug Thugs" More times in the commercial it may cause the name to be remembered more- but it may also get annoying as well and turn people off. Design an experiment to be used to find the best commercial design (assume 10,000 volunteers for the experiment).

A). What type of experiment design should be used? state a reasonable experimental hypothesis.

B). identify the dependent and independent variable

C)Describe how the trial might work. How will you measure the dependent variable?

D) Design an experiment to test your hypothesis.

Solutions

Expert Solution

A)

The repeated measure experimental design should be used where the each participant is treated with the independent variable conditions.

The hypothesis can be define as,

Null hypothesis: There is no difference in mean ratings for the independent variable conditions.

Alternative hypothesis: There is a significant difference in mean ratings for the independent variable conditions.

B)

Dependent Variable: The rating given by the particiapnts to the independent variable conditions.

Independent variable: Type of themes ("Tough-Guy-Funny" , "Straight Talk Facts" and "Bug Thugs" )

C)

In the experiment design, the participant is asked to respond in a rating scale 1-3 for the three commercial "Tough-Guy-Funny" , "Straight Talk Facts" and "Bug Thugs". Now, dependent variable is the rating recorded from each participant.

D)

Let the rating given by participants are as follow,

Ratings
Participant Tough-Guy-Funny Straight Talk Facts Bug Thugs
1 2 2 2
2 3 3 2
3 1 2 2
4 3 3 3
5 3 1 2
6 3 3 2
7 1 3 3
…… …… …… ……

The ANOVA Single Factor can be used to se the difference in mean rating score for each independent conditions. And after post hoc test it can be determine which input condition has a significant effect .
