The sport of Archery was featured at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event is segregated by gender, with women competing for one set of medals and men competing for a separate set of medals. Medals are determined by a head-to-head tournament, but before the tournament begins all of the archers compete in a "ranking round" where they are simply trying to earn the highest score possible. Both the male and female competitors shoot 72 arrows from a distance of 70 meters, which allows us to directly compare the results of the top female archers with the top male archers. Despite the fact that many more men are involved in competitive archery worldwide, 12 of the 64 women who competed in the event scored higher than the lowest male score, and 3 women had scores that would have placed them in the top half of the male field had they competed with the men. This suggests that many of the top female archers possess skills comparable to those of the top male archers.

Use Claudia Goldin's pollution model of discrimination to explain why the Olympics segregates male and female archers despite the fact that female archers may be able to compete at the same level as men.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer) Claudia Goldin in her pollution model of discrimination specifies how the pollution of discrimination is present in society, when women start joining a place where the space is all occupied by men, stereotypes starts emerging such as how women joining such place reduce the prestige and credentials of such place, now the same could be the case in olympics here,as described in the given case, however by using asymmetric information as described in the model,it becomes anyone to object to such segregation and steoreotyes can be then perfectly employed to make case for segregation, now Claudia discussed that ending these stereotypes and producing correct information about their abilities can end this pollution like in this case the given data has helped to debate the fact that segregation is discriminatory, when more such numbers start appearing the stronger case for removing segregation becomes. So to summarize, segregation happens in olympics owing to stereotypes, asymmetric information and owing to belief that prestige could get hampered if women starts participating without segregation.
