What property of compounds causes separation via gas chromatography? Will compounds of a higher or lower value of this property elute off the column first? How do you tell the number of components and how to calculate their percentage?

Interaction of molecules (solubility of molecules) with the stationary phase seperated the molecules.

The compounds that are more solube in the stationary phase travel slower and elute later while the less solube components in stationary phase travel faster nd elute out first.

Number of peaks in the cromatogram indicates the number of components in the sample.

The area percentage in the cromatogram tells about the percentage of th particular component in the sample. The area of the peak in a cromatogram is calculated by multiplying the length oh peak with the width of peak at 1/2(half) height.

Suppose there are 2 components and 2 peaks in a cromatogram obtained, the below diagram shows how to find there indiviual percentage.
