Respond to the following:
In your own words, explain potential energy, kinetic energy, conservation of energy and examples in daily life.
In your own words, explain the definition of work in Physics.
In your own words, explain Hooke's Law and elastic potential energy.
1) Potential energy is the energy possessed by a body by the virtue of its height from the surface of the Earth.
Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by a body due to its speed.
Conservation of energy states that energy can neither be created nor be destroyed; it can only be transferred from one form to another.
Example:
When playing pool, the cue ball is shot at a stationary 8 ball. The cue ball has energy. When the cue ball hits the 8 ball, the energy transfers from the cue ball to the 8 ball, sending the 8 ball into motion. The cue ball loses energy because the energy it had has been transferred to the 8 ball, so the cue ball slows down.
2) Work is the force required to move an object by unit meter in its direction.
3) Hooke’s law a law stating that the strain in a solid is proportional to the applied stress within the elastic limit of that solid.
Elastic potential energy is Potential energy stored as a result of deformation of an elastic object, such as the stretching of a spring.
