Health Effects of Exposures to Pesticides
Pesticides have a broad application, including their use in occupational and nonoccupational settings. Many pesticides have been linked to adverse health effects, and as a result, have been banned from use.
Using the Internet, research on episodes of exposure to pesticides that caused adverse health outcomes in humans. Choose one episode and respond to the following questions:
What are the health effects that the pesticide exposure caused in humans?
What are the steps that could have been taken to prevent the adverse health outcomes from occurring?
What are the changes required in the existing law that could discourage the reoccurrence of such exposures?
Apart from law enforcement, what are the other ways to prevent future occurrences of such episodes?
Explain the association between exposure to pesticides and health effects
1.The effects of pesticides on health includes acute toxicity
and chronic toxicity.
*Acute toxicity-
-respiratory tract irritation
-allergic sensitisation
-eye and skin irritation
-nausea and vomiting
-headaches,loss of consciousness
-extreme weakness,seizures and /or death
*Chronic toxicity-
-parkinson's disease
-asthma
-depression
-anxiety
-cancer
-ADHD.
2.preventing adverse effects of pesticides includes,
limiting the exposure to toxins
preventing exposure while applying pesticides through
hat,gloves,apron,boots,ear and eye protection ,respirator.
3.The changes to discourage the reoccurence of exposure to pesticides is law of "BIOSAFETY " by government.
4.ways to prevent future occurence includes-
handling pesticides before application should be only be done by
trained people
avoid leaking and spilling
know what to do in emergencies
do not eat, drink during mixing and loading
do not repack or load to other container.
