Imagine you and your friends are running in the neighborhood like electrons flowing through a circuit. Makeup stories that would serve as analogies for a parallel versus series circuits. Summarize the similarities and differences between the series and parallel circuits. Include your reasoning about what you think is happening.

Describe the temperature response of resistors in a circuit. Are there any devices which take advantage of this property? If so, explain how they work in terms of the properties of electrons.

Expert Solution

Imagine we and our friends are running in the neighborhood like electrons flowing through a circuit. Makeup stories that would serve as analogies for a parallel versus series circuits.

If we and our friends are running around the track going through all of the shorter ways or shortcuts (parallel), then we will get there faster than following the same track all the way around (series).

Summarize the similarities and differences between the series and parallel circuits. Include our reasoning about what we think is happening.

In a parallel circuit, the current is split and only goes through one of the resistors.

In a series circuit, the current goes through all of them.

Describe the temperature response of resistors in a circuit.

The change in resistance due to a change in temperature is normally quite small over a particular temperature range. Resistors are designed to operate within a specified temperature range.

1.) Resistors are electronic components that limit the flow of electrons through a circuit. The electrical resistance of a resistor is measured in Ohms. A certain type of resistor is advertised to have an average resistance of 100 Ohms. A sample of 20 resistors is selected and gives a mean resistance of 102.4 Ohms and sample standard deviation of ? = 5.1 Ohms.
