Guess Who's Coming to Dinner was recognized as being a progressive film regarding race relations at the time. Many have criticized it as being outdated today. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why?
The cognitive dissonance that people would be facing in various situations has been highlighted in the movie Guess who's coming to dinner. This is because this is the kind of relationship that people generally frown upon. This discomfort is faced by the parents of Joey in the movie.
the couple raised their daughter in a manner that she would be color blind. That she would not be focusing on the notion of white superiority and black and white, when she actually takes a decision that is in congruence with her beliefs, it affects both the parents.
her father, especially, is seen to be discomforted by the fact that their daughter wants to marry someone who's from a different ethnicity. Also, their maid is bothered by the fact that though fighting for civil rights, actually marrying one's daughter to a black persons is not right.
though trying to be progressive liberal, the movie highlights how people really have issues in accepting such relationships. I would not consider the film to be outdated given the present circumstances. Though the notion of equality and black lives matter have been the chant of the day, in reality, people do tend to make such discriminations. There are still many for whom the roots of such ideas are still well established.
