State whether the following statements are CORRECT or FALSE. If statement is FALSE, correct it
. 1- Smelting is a process that is used to extract Aluminium from ore
. 2- To measure the mechanical property of a material, in non-destructive testing, you need to destroy the specimen.
1. TRUE
Explanation:
Smelting is an extraction process. It is used to extract base metals from their ores by the application of heat. Base metals are inexpensive as compared to gold, silver etc which corrode easily as compared to noble metals. The class of base metals include, copper, nickel, zinc, lead, aluminium, tin, tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, cobalt, bismuth, cadmium, titanium, zirconium, antimony, manganese, beryllium, chromium, germanium, vanadium, gallium, hafnium, indium, niobium, rhenium, and thallium. So the above statement is true.
So yes, smelting is used to extract Aluminium from ore.
2. FALSE
Explanation: As the name itself says 'non- destructive' testing. Nothing is destroyed in this testing method. Mainly electromagnetic rays are used for the inspection of physical properties such as welding defects, discontinuities in the material. The specimen is not destroyed in this method. On the other hand we have destructive testing method which employs bending, dropping etc which destroys the specimen of the material.
So we infer that to measure the mechanical properties of a matery, in non-destructive testing we don't need to destroy the specimen.
