What is the purpose of using Hickman still instead of a conventional distillation apparatus in this synthetic experiment? Explain the advantages.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution:

The purpose of using Hickman still instead of a conventional distillation apparatus is,

Hickman distillation still is used in distillation to carry short path microscale distillation. Hickman distillation apparatus is a micro-scale purification apparatus that is used to distill small amounts of materials. This is similar to a simple distillation and only one fraction is usually collected. The purity is again related to the difference in boiling points, and fractionating columns can be employed to increase separation and purity.

Advantages:

1. It is short path distillation in which distillation is carried out in short path and in quick time.

2. Loss of material during distillation is less. Due to short path distillation material loss is very low.

3. No need of bulk quantity solution, even in small quantity distillation will carried out.

4. More advantage in research and development field.

5. Collection of fractions is easiest.
