Whats the difference between fracture surfaces of ductile and brittle materials? Whats the effect of axial load verse torsional load on the fracture surface of ductile and brittle materials.
In Ductile material , Crack may develop slowly and gradually as we increase the amount of stress . First of all area slowly decreases , then necking region forms and finally the failure point comes where the ductile material breaks . While in Brittle material , no Necking region forms and soon as stress are applied the cracks suddenly spread very rapidly and failure occurs without plastic deformation . Now If we apply Torsional Load on Brittle material it will bend but not break , wheras while applying Axial Load on Ductile material it will tends to elongate , thus at some point necking will form which ultimately will lead to failure point . Now for Brittle material on applying Torsional load it will break suddenly without any plastic deformation and necking region formation . Basically the difference between rittle and Ductile materials are formation of Tougness area , plastic deformation occurenece , Necking region formation , etc |
