Consider the position vs. time graph of an object in free fall. What mathematical function describes this curve? Explain why this must be true.

Solutions

Expert Solution

For Free fall , relation between position and time is

negative sign is taken due to acceleration due to gravity is in downward direction.

u = initial velocity.

t = time

s = position function.

Free Fall occurs due to Force due to gravity.

according to newtons second law;

Net force in direction of motion = mass * Acceleration in the given direction

Hence; in case of free fall condition, only Self weight of object act in downward direction

therefore

acceleratiom (a) = g (acceleration due to gravity)

So, acceleration during Free fall is constant.

We know the relation between position(s) and acceleration(s)

then

where a = constant

upon integration

again integrating

where

c and c1 are arbitary constant.
