Predict what would happen to a motile bacterium undergoing chemotaxis if the Mot proteins suddenly ceased to function.
Chemotaxis in bacteria:
Chemotaxis is the movement of organism in a specific direction as a response to chemical stimuli. The rotatory nature of bacterial flagellar motion can be clockwise(bacterial cell exhibits forward motion ceases and cells stumble) or counterclock wise (exhibits forward motion-runs).
Flagella motor proteins includes MotA ,MotB and FliG which create proton channel which ultimately drives flagellar motion.MotA function as transmembrane proton channel and MotB has proposed to anchor MotA to the peptidoglycan of the cell wall.MotA and MotB proteins form a complex and their interaction directly involves or is strongly influences by the periplasmic loops of MotA.They both forms the stationary part of the flagella motor the statour keeping the protein fixed in place.Hence when Mot protein ceases to function the attachment of bacteria flagella to form assembly of bacterial flagella is altered.
