Correlate the current issue of the environment, socio-economic and sustainability with sound engineering practise
The current issue of the environment, socio-economic and sustainability with sound engineering practice are-
(1) Economic affordability
To be sustainable engineering services it is important to provide basic needs which should be economically affordable by all societies and people.
By some efficiency improvement and environmental mitigation measures it can be implemented so that it can save money , time, etc.
(2)Equity
All the societies must to be able to access engineering services regardless of geographic location in order to achieve engineering sustainability.
In addition equity among developed and developing countries should be achieved in terms of engineering services.
The engineering sustainability also requires that future generations can also able to access resources.
(3)Meeting increasing resource demands
The increasing usage of material and energy resources particularly in developing countries as they becoming more industrialized and their living standards rising day by day must be able to be meet these demands efficiently.
It is a challenging task because of population rise populations rise.
(4)Safety
The engineering services must be safe in terms of injury and cause can cause few negative health effects as reasonably possible in the short and long terms to be sustainable.
(5)Community involvement and social acceptability
The people and communities must participate in major engineering related decisions if engineering sustainability is to be attained as the support of these groups is critical and plays major roles in success of any initiatives and such support always requires consultation and involvement in decision making.
(6)Meeting human needs
Human dimensions of new technologies must be addressed to achieve engineering sustainability.
(7) Appropriate land use
The use of land for engineering related activities always needs to be balanced with other needs such as agriculture, infrastructure development, recreation etc.
It is a major challenge with technologies like biomass energy which often involves the growth of energy plants on land that could be used for other purposes like food production.
(8)Aesthetics
Ensuring engineering products are aesthetically appealing is an important aspect of engineering sustainability in present scenario.
It includes cleanliness of the environment which is very important aesthetic aspect of sustainability.
(9)Lifestyles
The modification of lifestyle and tempering desires that are engineering driven can help in the quest for engineering sustainability.
The aspirations of people tend to increase continually this aspect of engineering sustainability is often very challenging.
Transforming behavioral and decision making patterns requires recognition that current development paths are not sustainable.
The translating future threats related with engineering into immediate priorities is and will likely remain one of the most difficult challenges facing policy makers.
(10)Population
Increment in global population increases stresses on the environment and the carrying capacity of the planet.
The importance of sustainable engineering need to be accounted for population growth or address it in other ways.
The key requirements for engineering sustainability are-
1. Sustainable resources
2. Sustainable processes
3. Increased efficiency
4. Reduced environmental impact
1.Sustainable Resources
All engineering activities utilize resources that are derived from nature.
The degree to which resources are sustainable depends on many factors such as scarcity and importance to ecosystems.
2. Sustainable Processes
The resources are used in engineering processes and operations to yield products or services.
The important requirement of sustainable engineering is the use of sustainable processes.
3.Increased Efficiency
It can be achieved by following ways-
· improved resource management
· resource demand management
· resource substitution
· better matching of energy carriers and energy demands
· more efficient utilization of resources in terms of both quantity and quality
4. Reduced Environmental Impact
The impacts associated with engineering processes of concern regarding engineering sustainability are-
Global climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions which causes global warming.
Ozone depletion due to destruction of the atmospheric ozone layer and subsequent increases
in ultraviolet reaching the earth surface.
Acidification and its impact on soil and water due to acidic emissions
