A photographer in a helicopter ascending vertically at a constant rate of 15.0m/s accidentally drops a camera out the window when the helicopter is 54.0m above the ground.

a)How long will the camera take to reach the ground?

b)What will its speed be when it hits?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The ascending velocity (or) initial velocity of camera, u = 15 m/s

   The height at which it will drop, h = 54 m

A)

We have, h = (1/2)gt^2 - ut

                  (1/2)gt^2 - ut - h = 0

                  (1/2)(9.8)t^2 - 15t - 54 = 0

The time taken by camera to reach the ground, t = 5.19 sec

B)

    The velocity at which it hits the ground is given by

                        v = u + at

                           = 15 - 9.8 x 5.19

                           = -35.86 m/s

An airplane is flying at a constant horizontal velocity of 184.5 m/s and drops a rocket. The rocket falls for 10.24 s without air resistance and under the influence of gravity only, and then fires its thrusters. From the moment the thrusters are one, the rocket has a net acceleration of 5.481 direscted 30.21 degrees above the horizontal. How far apart are the plane and the rocket when the rocket passes back through the cruising altitude of the plane?

An astronaut is exploring an unknown planet when she accidentally drops an oxygen canister into a 1.90-m-deep pool filled with an unknown liquid. Although she dropped the canister 46 cm from the edge, it appears to be 56 cm away when she peers in from the edge. What is the liquid's index of refraction? Assume that the planet's atmosphere is similar to earth's.

a toy rocket is fired fired at rest vertically upwards and accelerates at a constant rate. At the instant the engine cuts out, the rocket has risen to 52 m and acquired a velocity of 80 m/s. A punter drops a ball from rest vertically 1 meter down onto his foot. The ball leaves the foot with a speed of 27 m/s at an angle 52° above the horizontal. What is the impulse delivered by the foot? (Use 0.41 kg for the mass of the ball. Assume the punter faces the +x-direction and that the +y-direction is upward. Enter the impulse in kg · m/s and the direction in degrees counterclockwise from the +x-axis.)
