Psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg argued that individuals develop a sense of right and wrong in stages. Review the chart of Kohlberg’s stages of moral development in the class lecture this week. At what stage would you place yourself?
Lawrence Kohlberg proposed three levels of moral development with two stages in each. The first stage is characterised by avoiding punishments where one act good just escape from being punished. The second stage helps one understand that different individuals have different viewpoints. The third stage is characterised by gaining the approval of others to improve interpersonal relationships. The fourth stage refers to the understanding of the society’s wider rules and legal aspects thus understanding the law in order to avoid guilt. In fifth stage one understands that rules and laws are for greater good of all but it may also work against few at times. The final stage helps people frame their own moral principles which may or may not fit the law of the country. I think I’m at the 4th stage where I’m trying to understand the rules and laws of the land thus obeying it in order to avoid any guilty feeling and the punishment that comes along with that.
