DO YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE AND WHY?
OTs should evaluate clients by using a functional and meaningful activity, which will in hand allow the client to feel motivated to perform the occupation to the best of their ability. Using a functional task for evaluation allows the therapist to understand a person as a whole and observe their way of completing an activity. The therapist can comprehend their difficulties and compensation strategies when observing the client perform a familiar task. According to Pedretti (pg.335), “If problems and their causes can be identified, the therapist has a good foundation for establishing training objectives, priorities, methods, and the need for assistive devices” (2018).
Yes i completely agree with this statement.
According to Indian Occupational Therapist Association Occupational Therapy is a holistic and evidence based client centred first contract or referral professional of modern health care system based on science of occupation with primary focus on purposeful goal oriented activity enhanced with the use of latest technological system for evaluation education diagnosis and treatment of clients of any age group whose functions are impaired by physical, psychological and cognitive impairments, development disorders or ageing process affecting their quality of life with the aim to prevent disability, promote health and well being and return to optimum occupational role(April 25, 2019)
According the above mentioned definition occupational therapist is involved in engaging the client in functional and meaningful activity. It will help the client who had undergone physical, psychological and cognitive impairment or development disorder or ageing. Here the therapist with the help of functional task try to impart confidence to the client and helps him/her to come back to normal life. The Therapist can evaluate the client with the help of analysis on performing an activity. The key in performing the activity is to understand the client and the major areas in which he/she faces difficulty. It help the therapist to restructure the activities or customise them according the need of the client.
Eg If a client comes to an Occupational Therapist with an issue of memory loss by a young chap prearing for examination he/ she can be motivated to take up a memory test with very few objects. slowly the number of objects can be increased by the Therapist to improve the memory. Later If the therapist identify the the reason for memory loss is lack of confidence or fear he/she can slowly impart confidence to the client by providing different activities that can help him/her to gain confidence. A reassurance from the Therapist will act as a catalyst in the process
