Sophocles once said that Euripides depicts people as they are rather than as they ought to be. Do you agree? Can this play still speak to us from across the centuries?
Yes, I do agree with the statement made by Sophocles on Euripides. This is because most of his plays dealt with characters who were more humane though being from an mystical aspect. It is true that the characters of Euripides' plays were were relatable as they had close connection to human beings. It has been said that Euripides used to show the human side or the mortal and imperfect side of the greek greek heroes and the gods spoken of. Another reason behind my support of Sophocles' claim is that Euripides used to show some dark sides of his characters such as shades of revenge, shades of jealousy and shades of insanity which can also be referred as a transparent depiction of normal people are and not a depiction of how people should be.
I also do feel that his plays can really touch our soul from across the centuries because the characters are pretty relatable also in the present day scenario. The dark sides prevail in human beings more than ever and the plays can make us understand more about what we are, our dark sides and may make us question our thoughts and actions.
