Formal communication challenges -
- New generations: Millenials and younger people are more suited
to the newer channels like social media and the like and favour
informal forms of communication more than formal ones. Hence,
conencting to them using formal communication channels is difficult
and might prove ineffective.
- Relations with employees: In office scenarios, it can come of
as a very authoritative stance to use formal and might not always
be taken well.
- Inflexibility: Since it has to follow through a lot of
channels, it is extremely difficult to tweak or make enough changes
to a formally communicated message.
- Lack of understanding: Formal messages tend to be rigid and not
sufficiently tailored to everyone's comprehension abilities.
- Slow: It takes a more time to come to a concensus through
formal means as it has to follow a lot of formal channels.
Informal communication challenges -
- Rumours: Informal communication leaves a lot of scope for
rumors to be spread as there is no formal credibility to the
information.
- Lack of control: There is no control of the authorities once
the information has been released and this lets the information
spread to all possible directions.
- Conflict: Since there is a lot of human interaction in the
spread of this information, there are chances of conflict.
- Lack of secrecy: Since the information is spread through
informal channels, it can be vey easy for sensitive information to
be leaked.
