A. Discussion Thread: "Free Software"
Consider the "Free Software" approach advocated by Richard Stallman and others (see Section 4.6 of Gift of Fire). Do you think this approach should be adopted? How do you think the Free Software approach would affect the quantity and quality of software that would be produced? Would the current funding methods for free software be sufficient? Are there other modifications of the current system of software licensing that should be considered? Which arguments for free software apply to music? What are some of the arguments people give to justify copying software? Debate whether software should be copyrightable or should be freely available for copying.
Yes this approach should be adopted partially. Free software will increase both the quality and quantity and large number of open source contributors will contribute into it to increase its quality and also as the people are large in number so more and more software would be produced. While in many countries or in organisations the open source contributors are not paid much leading to decrease in interest among developers to devote their time which can't feed them, off course there are some developers who wants to contribute something to the society but how long they can survive without any income. The licensing required is that anyone can edit the software according to his requirements and upload it for the community.
Arguments for free software apply to music
1.Find and fix bugs score/sheet music
2.Adapt and improve programs songs
3.Modify a program song to meet the needs of specific users
4.Create new or better programs songs based on the old ones
Arguments people give to justify copying software
1. Not everyone can afford premium software.
2. Let all contribute and improve the quality of software.
3. Let all use it and make earth a better place to live.
Some software which are useful for large number of people should be freely available while other which are used by only large MNC's should be paid one.
